Goodwood Maths Day

The Chichester EBP were very lucky to be invited by the British Horseracing Education Standards Trust to take around 30 students to Goodwood Racecourse on 10th May 2007 and again on 4th October 2007.

The days were focused on ‘Maths’ and how this is applied in a real life setting. On 10th May, students spent the day working alongside Judy Allen from BHEST and jockey Vincent Slattery. On 4th October they worked alongside Jockey Ollie McPhail.

Students spent the morning measuring the distance round the Parade Ring, visiting the weighing room to work out how jockey’s use the handicap system and gain an insight into the working life of a jockey. Later in the day students were able to look at the science behind the photo-finish and watch the horses come out into the parade ring prior to the first race.

Six students were very kindly invited to take part in the judging of the best turned out horse for the first race.

BHEST and the EBP will be repeating the day again on 24th January 2008 at Fontwell Racecourse involving 30 students from Bognor Regis Community College.
